Treating teeth grinding in Graz

← Back to Botox

Teeth grinding is often noticed only through its consequences: morning jaw pain, neck tension, headaches or worn teeth. It frequently happens at night and unconsciously. Botulinum toxin selectively relaxes the masseter muscle and thereby reduces the force with which the teeth are pressed together.

Who is this treatment for?

For adults who grind or clench their teeth at night or under stress. The treatment addresses the cause of the muscle overload and is often used alongside a bite splint – as a clearly visible side effect, the jawline often becomes narrower and softer in contour.

When is it not suitable?

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, with certain neuromuscular conditions, and if there is an infection in the treatment area. If you have complaints in the jaw joint itself, we discuss whether an additional dental assessment makes sense.

How does the treatment work?

Every treatment begins with a detailed consultation – medical history, an honest assessment and full information. After palpating the masseter muscle – you briefly clench your teeth for this – the active substance is injected into the muscle on both sides with a fine needle. The treatment takes only a few minutes; anaesthesia is usually not necessary.

Possible side effects

Minor redness or bruising at the injection sites is possible. In the first few days chewing firm food may feel unfamiliar; this settles quickly. I explain all further risks during the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I eat normally afterwards?

Yes. Chewing function is preserved, only its maximum force is reduced. In the first few days chewing very firm food may feel unfamiliar.

Will my face become narrower?

With regular treatment the overworked masseter muscle recedes slightly, which makes the jawline appear softer. Many patients experience this as a welcome side effect.

How often does it need to be repeated?

Usually every four to six months. With regular treatment the intensity of grinding decreases in many patients.

Can it be combined with a bite splint?

Yes, the two complement each other well: the splint protects the teeth, the treatment reduces the overload of the muscle.
