What is it and what is it for?
Hyaluronic acid – a substance that occurs naturally in the body – can be used to hydrate the lips, define their contour and subtly add volume. The aim is harmony: lips that suit your face.
How does the treatment work?
Numbing cream is applied beforehand, and modern fillers additionally contain a local anaesthetic. The treatment itself takes 15 to 30 minutes. Most patients find it easily tolerable.
When will you see the result?
Immediately – though at first with swelling. The final result appears after about two weeks, once the swelling has fully settled and the material has integrated. Depending on the product and your metabolism, it lasts around six to twelve months.
What should you expect afterwards?
- Swelling is normal and to be expected – strongest in the first 24 to 48 hours. During this time the lips look fuller than the final result.
- Bruises are common on the lips – they heal within about a week
- Small lumps that can be felt but not seen – these usually settle on their own
What to bear in mind
- For 24 hours: no exercise, no alcohol, no sauna, no vigorous rubbing
- Cooling helps against swelling (not directly on the skin)
- Timing: allow at least three to four weeks before important occasions. A lip treatment the day before an event is not a good idea.
- Preventing bruises: for a few days beforehand, avoid alcohol, aspirin (unless medically prescribed) and omega-3 supplements
Good to know
Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved. If the result does not match your expectations, the material can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. That provides reassurance – nothing is permanent.
Who is it not suitable for?
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, active cold sores (the treatment can trigger an outbreak – if you are prone to them, we discuss preventive medication), and infections in the treatment area.
